چکیده

Recent research has shown that lexical properties known to influence word recognition – namely, frequency, neighborhood density, and neighborhood frequency – also affect the pronunciation of words (e.g., Balota & Chumbley, 1985; Goldinger & Summers, 1989; Wright, 1997). These findings could be explained within a cooperative framework, according to which speakers continually assess the ability of listeners to recover the message, and modify their pronunciations accordingly. However, this account assumes that speakers can somehow determine the effects of certain lexical properties on intelligibility. In this paper, we report a preliminary study in which subjects rated how intelligible they thought different words would be in an imagined noisy environment. The results suggest that speakers can indeed predict how lexical neighborhood characteristics influence word recognition.

Preliminary Guidelines for Subjective Evaluation of Audio Source Separation Algorithms

Evaluating audio source separation algorithms means rating the quality or intelligibility of separated source signals. While objective criteria fail to account for all auditory phenomena so far, precise subjective ratings can be obtained by means of listening tests. In practice, the accuracy and the reproducibility of these tests depend on several design issues. In this paper, we discuss some o...

Effect of Lexical Frequency and Neighborhood Density on Audiovisual Spoken Word Recognition

The current study investigated how lexical factors influence the intelligibility of spoken words, and how those effects interact with visual information. A forced-choice word-identification experiment was carried out under auditory-visual and auditoryonly conditions with varying S/N ratios, and the effects of lexical frequency and neighborhood density on identification accuracy were analyzed. T...

Effects of enhancement of spectral changes on speech quality and subjective speech intelligibility

Most information in speech is carried in the spectral changes over time, rather than in static spectral shape per se. The present study presents a preliminary assessment of the possible benefits for speech intelligibility of enhancing spectral changes across time, using behavioral tests with both normal-hearing and hearing-impaired subjects. Ratings of speech quality and intelligibility were ob...

Objective quality evaluation of noise-suppressed speech: effects of temporal envelope and fine-structure cues

While temporal envelope and fine-structure cues are known to be good predictors for speech intelligibility, it is not clear how well they are correlated with subjective quality ratings, particularly those using noise-suppressed speech. The present work evaluated the performance of two objective measures (i.e., NCM and TFSS), which were originally developed with primarily envelope or fine-struct...

Subjective frequency ratings for 432 ASL signs.

Given the importance of lexical frequency for psycholinguistic research and the lack of comprehensive frequency data for sign languages, we collected subjective estimates of lexical frequency for 432 signs in American Sign Language (ASL). Our participants were 59 deaf signers who first began to acquire ASL at ages ranging from birth to 14 years old and who had a minimum of 10 years of experienc...
